Technisource Survey: IT Employee Confidence Index Reaches New Low in First Quarter of 2009

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., April 23, 2009 — The IT Employee Confidence Index decreased 0.7 points to 39.7 in the first quarter of 2009, decreasing to a new low since tracking began in the fourth quarter of 2005, according to a recent survey commissioned by Technisource®, the technology placement division of Spherion Corporation (NYSE:SFN). The survey, conducted by Harris Interactive®, indicates that overall confidence levels among IT workers surveyed dropped slightly in the first quarter, as a result of workers’ increased uncertainty about the economy, job market and their personal employment situation. Despite this doubt, more technology workers say they are likely to look for a job in the next year.

Results from the IT Employment Report:

  • Sixty-six percent of technology workers believe the economy is getting weaker, down 10 percentage points from the fourth quarter of 2008.
  • Fewer technology workers are confident in the future of their current employer. Specifically, 58 percent versus 67 percent in the fourth quarter.
  • Thirty-eight percent of workers are likely to look for a new job in the next 12 months, compared to 35 percent in the previous quarter.

“Given the current state of the economy, our latest results come as no surprise. As cost-saving measures continue to be pushed to the forefront, now is the time for IT organizations to step up to the plate and show how they can make their business more efficient,” said Michael Winwood, president of Technisource. Now more than ever, companies view IT as a value-added business partner rather than a mere cost center. As businesses ride out the current economic storm, we are still seeing demand for workers with highly sought-after skill sets in application development, networking, business intelligence, help desk and programming. Today’s IT worker needs to adapt to having more of a ‘hybrid’ role where obtaining cross-discipline experience is a must.”
